The arrival of the new Frontier printer came in a press release from Fujifilm, North America on 17th July, 2025 (available in September).
The DX400 series offers enhanced print speeds and improved efficiency compared to its predecessor, built for consistent output in various print environments. It boasts improved durability, with a lifespan extended to up to 400,000 pages.
A new 250ml pouch-style ink bag system contributes to improved cost-effectiveness for consumables and supports Fujifilm’s sustainability initiatives by reducing waste compared to traditional cartridges. Its lightweight design and compact footprint make it suitable for use both in the lab and out in the field.
A significant addition is the double-sided printing capability on cut sheets, enabling new product lines like professional photobooks and multi-page calendars.
The printer also supports a broad range of print sizes, from short 50mm cuts for small formats to 1-meter panorama length with the possibility of creating all sizes in between.
The 6-colour ink system now includes newly added sky blue and pink inks for enhanced skin tone and colour reproduction, complemented by Fujifilm’s Image Intelligence™ technology for automatic image correction in Fujifilm systems.
The DX400W introduces wired connectivity (n.b. DX400 does not support wired LAN) alongside the standard USB connections, offering versatile options for lab layout and printer placement.
When paired with BlueFX, the DX400 can be integrated into clusters of up to 17 printers, including a mixture of other models like DX100 and even other makes, for scalable production tailored to demand.
With decades of experience in photographic printing software, InsituaFX Software – creators of BlueFX – have delivered workflow solutions for some of the world’s leading imaging brands.
Based in London, UK, these include companies such as Kodak, Noritsu, Agfa, and Fujifilm. Our team has worked closely with Fujifilm across the USA, Europe, Japan, and Australia, including OEM collaborations and direct input at Fujifilm’s Japanese R&D sites.
We build efficient, scalable software for photographic print labs, including full integration with the DX400’s predecessor, the DX100 and other Frontier Minilabs with a pedigree that goes back to the very first digital minilab in the UK, the Fujifilm LP1000!
Whether you’re running a school portrait operation, sports volume workflow, e-commerce photo fulfilment or in Retail, BlueFX brings clarity to production, keeping your print workflow sharp, consistent, and focused on what matters most.
To create solutions that can be best described as …”it’s workflow at the push of a button — and then, ideally, you don’t need to push it again!”
Efficient handling of multi-order batch jobs
School photography requires handling high volumes of individual orders efficiently, ideally as part of a single, automated batch. At the heart of this process is package printing, where each student’s images are grouped into predefined layouts and printed in the correct sequence.
Orders often include a batch ID, student ID, QR code, or barcode for identification and tracking throughout the workflow. BlueFX supports all of these and automatically generates job separators, clearly marked with the student’s name and order metadata.
This is especially critical when the same job is split across multiple printers, helping ensure every order is tracked, matched, and delivered accurately, with minimal intervention and fewer errors.
The Fujifilm Frontier DX400/DX400W offers duplex (double-sided) printing, making it ideal for school applications like photobooks and yearbooks.
While the DX400 series supports a range of standard print sizes, BlueFX extends this flexibility by generating custom cut lengths between 50 mm and 1000 mm, reducing waste and eliminating unnecessary trimming during package printing. This allows many formats to be printed at final size, particularly useful in school packs that include smaller prints like wallets or ID cards.
The short minimum cut length of 50 mm is especially helpful in building tightly optimised packages. And because the DX400W supports multiple printers connected over a LAN, labs can easily scale production to meet peak seasonal demand.
A noteworthy bonus: when fitted with the optional paper cassette, the DX400W effectively functions as a dual-roll printer, increasing both convenience and versatility in a school photography setup.
Some photographers working in school or portraiture stay within the Fujifilm family, often using the Fujifilm GFX range (GFX100S II / GFX100 II) or the versatile X-T5 and X-T30 II.
Flexible formats for varied output requirements
In sports workflows, jobs often contain a mix of product types: individual player shots, team group photos, novelty formats like trading cards, bag tags, and banner prints.
BlueFX simplifies this by supporting mixed package layouts within a single job and automatically routing output based on media or print size. In a studio setting, BlueFX can also apply backgrounds and custom text to green-screen images as part of a batch.
The DX400’s ability to handle cut lengths up to 1 meter accommodates wide-format group images or panoramic layouts, which are a regular part of team and event photography – some sports shooters work within the same Fuji ecosystem, for example using Fuji X-T5 and X-H2S. Its smaller minimum cut length also suits wallet and ID-sized outputs, as well as photo gifts.
Paired with BlueFX’s clustered print control, it’s possible to run multiple units in parallel, both networked and via USB, load balancing throughput and directing output to the appropriate printer, all while maintaining the original order of printing.
Because of the printer’s variable cut length ability, this enables BlueFX to include a minimal-length separator for part-orders on each printer.
The turnaround for whole events can now be measured in hours, not days.
Print-on-demand integration across multiple sales channels
For e-commerce operations using platforms like Shopify, GotPhoto, Pixfizz, or Dakis, BlueFX acts as the production engine behind the scenes. It pulls in orders from multiple sales channels, applies job-specific rules like cropping, templates, and layouts, and routes output to the right printers, all automatically.
Whether it’s individual prints, packages, or stickers, BlueFX handles the job queue and drives the workflow from input to print, removing the need for manual sorting, even when using a mix of DX100 and DX400 printers. This kind of automation makes it easier to scale without compromising accuracy or turnaround time.
With support for both wired LAN and USB connections, the DX400W is highly adaptable to different production environments.
While initially positioned for retail settings, emphasising its small footprint, flexible store layout options, and lightweight design for retail kiosks, BlueFX shifts the focus to high-volume fulfilment from a virtual store. This extends its utility to novel locations such as distribution warehouses, where the DX400W’s core attributes remain highly relevant for Print-on-Demand operations.
High-capacity ink bags reduce refill frequency, while duplex support and extended cut length allow for diverse product ranges – from photobooks and calendars to banner prints – all within the same infrastructure.
E-commerce serves as a common link between the School, Sports, and Retail segments, enabling BlueFX to leverage the full range of capabilities through automation: standard prints, panoramas, packages, templates, stickers, delivery notes, address labels, API integration, and more.
This comprehensive automation makes the DX400 series exceptionally well-suited to the demands of variable data printing and high-volume e-commerce fulfilment.
BlueFX’s multi-pose layout automation can also create photobooth-style prints automatically – handy for everything from school portraits to sports events, and even social gatherings.
The DX400W features a 6-colour ink system, which includes the addition of two new ink colours: Sky Blue (SB) and Pink (P). This is a significant upgrade from previous models (like the DX100) and is aimed at achieving more faithful reproduction of skin textures and subtle colour changes, leading to higher image quality.
In addition to USB connectivity, the DX400W now supports wired LAN connections. This is a major improvement for retail and event environments, offering more flexible installation and networking capabilities.
The ink capacity has been increased from 200ML (in the prior model, the DX100) to 250ML per colour in the DX400W. This improves operational efficiency by reducing the frequency of ink replacement.
The DX400W uses pouch-style ink supply units instead of traditional cartridge-based systems, which are designed to reduce waste.
The DX400/DX400W boasts a 30% reduction in size over the prior model (DX100), making it even more compact and easier to fit into various spaces.
Lifespan up to 400,000 pages (1.3 times the durability of DE100-XD).
Approximately 9.4 seconds per 4″ x 6″ print.
Fujifilm’s proprietary image processing for automatic correction of exposure and colour issues.
